Welcome to the Arawa Canoe Club

Who we are

The Arawa Canoe Club is dedicated to kayak racing - mostly medium to long distance races on grade 2 to 2+ whitewater, and flat water races, from sprints up to marathon distance.  Over 350 members cover the spectrum from very social to very competitive and are well supported with training sessions, race programmes and great facilities in the heart of Christchurch.
Our building is on the edge of the Avon River, has storage for 165 kayaks, and has changing facilities (separate mens and women's!), gym, kayak ergs, kitchen and a big meeting room.  We have a range of club kayaks available to members to get them going, and to get them going higher up the competitive ladder.

Club Rooms & Gym

Our club is for use by all members, please help to keep it tidy.  There is a rubbish bin by the door and a couple of brooms floating around to sweep up dust and weed.  As we are now having to pay to dispose of our rubbish, please place any recyclable items in the recycle bin to help reduce the load.

Please note that the gym is for use by our financial members only.  You can not bring a guest with you.

There are groups using the gym on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays from 6.30am - 8.30am. The gym is closed to other users during these times.

If you notice any maintenance issues or kayaks that need attention please contact Steve, our premises and equipment committee member, if we don't know it's broke we can't fix it!

AGM this Thursday 26th May

7pm upstairs at the Club after Weedcatchers.  Fish n Chips provided!  Come along to hear what is happening with the club and your chance to have your input.  We like to keep things moving so as the meeting doesn't drag on and also a good chance to meet/chat with other club members.   Please remind our other paddler friends now and we look forward to seeing you there.

Beginner Kayaking Sessions

We are now running Beginner Session 3 times per week with our Club Development Coach Chris Stagg.

Click here to go to our Training Page for more details.

New paddlers are always welcome to come to our beginner sessions.  Your first week is free (up to 3 sessions).  You can find a membership form here.

Winter kayaking

Winter paddling involves rugging up warm, and looking forward to a hot shower at the end of the session.

It also involves being seen.  So wearing lights at night is a MUST - by everyone, not just members.  A headlamp is ideal - or front and back lights attached to you or your kayak.  It is compulsory to wear lights when paddling in the dark and using club equipment.  If you are seen with club gear and no lights, you will be asked to return the gear back to the Club.

The club has negoiated a great deal with Torpedo 7 to provide us with head torches - we've even got the batteries for you - this means no excuses for not being lit up.

See the posters at the club for more details.

Kaiapoi River Race 1st May 2016

The race was tight at times and by all accounts a good time had by all.  Click here to read the race report.

Thursday night is Club Night

Thursday night is still Club Night.

Chris will be taking beginner sessions, we will have other coaches available to assist our Intermediate paddlers and Weedcatchers will continue over Winter.  Feedback so far has been positive.  Our beginners in particular are appreciating our awesome new floodlight which are lighting up the Avon out front of the club.

Club Constitution & Rules

This is what our club is based on and we are bound by these rules.  Click here to view.

Like any club, we also have rules.  These are designed to ensure things run smoothly and to provide members with some guidance as to what is expected.  To familarise yourself with the rules, click here.

REWARD......

Arawa Canoe Club is now actively seeking coaches to help with our beginner sessions.  The time requirement is not huge, helping once or twice a month helps share the load.

Times are Wednesdays 5:30pm.

Contact Club Coach or sign up at the club on the coaching notice board located just inside the main door in the older part of the storage shed.
