Welcome to the Arawa Canoe Club

Who we are

The Arawa Canoe Club is dedicated to kayak racing - mostly medium to long distance races on grade 2 to 2+ whitewater, and flat water races, from sprints up to marathon distance.  Our 460 members (April 2009) cover the spectrum from very social to very competitive and are well supported with training sessions, race programmes and great facilities in the heart of Christchurch.

Our building is on the edge of the Avon River, has storage for 165 kayaks (although plans are under way to double the storage space - July 2009), and has showers and changing facilities (separate mens and women's!), gym, kayak ergs, kitchen and a big meeting room.  We have a range of club kayaks available to members to get them going, and to get them going higher up the competitive ladder.

The club aims to provide members with a variety of events that collectively will entertain, challenge, and improve their kayaking skills, and have a good time doing so.  The bulk of our members are multisporters, so there is no end of advice and guidance available on all sorts of related topics.  The club is also becoming a national force in flatwater racing - sprint and marathon distances, in K1's, K2's and K4's.

Come down to the clubrooms on Wednesday evenings for a no-obligation session on the water, or contact us for more information.

New storage area is now online

The Clubroom extensions are done and operational, and look superb.  There is a heap more storage and the gym has been moved downstairs.  If you have a long boat (i.e. more than 5.7m) get in touch with the Storage Officer to arrange a place in the extension.

Appeals to the Environment Court are being lodged and expect to be heard around August next year.

New club sponsors

We are pleased to announce that PriceWaterhouseCoopers have come on board as primary sponsors of the club, with generous support for the Autumn and Spring series races, and the extension to the clubrooms. Click here for their newsletter.

Also, Injury Solutions are linking their sports medicine services with the club, donating $2 to the extension fund for every Arawa member who uses their services.
