Welcome to the Arawa Canoe Club

Who we are

The Arawa Canoe Club is dedicated to kayak racing - mostly medium to long distance races on grade 2 to 2+ whitewater, and flat water races, from sprints up to marathon distance.  Over 350 members cover the spectrum from very social to very competitive and are well supported with training sessions, race programmes and great facilities in the heart of Christchurch.
Our building is on the edge of the Avon River, has storage for 165 kayaks, and has changing facilities (separate mens and women's!), gym, kayak ergs, kitchen and a big meeting room.  We have a range of club kayaks available to members to get them going, and to get them going higher up the competitive ladder.

Club Rooms  & Gym

Our club is for use by all members, please help to keep it tidy.  There is a rubbish bin by the door and a couple of brooms floating around to sweep up dust and weed.  As we are now having to pay to dispose of our rubbish, please place any recyclable items in the recycle bin to help reduce the load.

Please note that the gym is for use by our financial members only.  You can not bring a guest with you.

If you notice any maintenance issues or kayaks that need attention please contact Richard, our premises and equipment committee member, if we don't know it's broke we can't fix it!

Club AGM - Thursday 22nd May

It's almost that time of year again.  The annual AGM will be held on 22nd May.  Fish and Chips will arrive at 7.00pm with the AGM kicking off at 7.30pm.  The meeting is generally all done and dusted in 40 minutes or so.  It's a great opportunity to meet and catch up with other club members and find out what is happening in and around the club.

Do you fancy giving something back to the club? We require a racing co-ordinator.  We're looking for someone with enthusism and some ideas for our club racing calendar.  You don't have to physically run every race, but you will ensure that they run smoothly.  This role will not prevent you from racing yourself!  Full support and training is provided, so don't let lack of experience stop you from putting up your hand!  This is our opportunity to stamp your mark on our racing calendar.

Contact Bianca for more details.

Arawa Canoe Club is now actively seeking coaches to help with our newly formatted sessions.  The time requirement is not huge, helping once or twice a month helps share the load.

So anyone who can help out on the occasional Thursday at 5.30pm, we would love to hear from you. Contact James our club coach to register your interest.

Bridge Repair Info

There repairs happening on many of the bridges that we paddle under and around on the Avon.   Be mindful of any obstacles this may create and take care around repairs.  Be sure to obey any signage that is posted.

** Changes to our Beginners Coaching Sessions **

Our club coaches have put their heads together and the result has been a decision to trial a new format for our training sessions.  What this means is there will now be more support for paddlers once they process past our beginners sessions and help bridge the gap between beginners and Weedcatchers.

So, commencing Thursday 10th April all of our sessions will run on a Thursday night.

You can come to 3 sessions to try it out before we ask you to join the club.  Click here for an application form.

Rasdex Classic River Race 2013

The river and weather gods were against us this year for the Rasdex Classic River Race and the race was switched to a 27km course on the Avon River.  This didn't mean it was an easy race though.  There were some good currents and epic battles.  For a full race report click here
